The Rough Riders numbered about 1000 man in total so, given the number of carbines in the ranges above, odds are relatively low that any carbine within that set is a Rough Rider gun. Based on my research, the RR range of serial numbers cluster in the ranges 27010 to 28995, 35164 to 35741, 68013 to 6877 to 79499. In no way can it be said to be a “Rough Rider” carbine, it is just ‘in the range” of carbines known to have been issued to that unit. Volunteer Cavalry, the “Rough Riders” (RRs). This M1896 Krag carbine falls within the range of serial numbers issued to the 1st U.S.
